el capitan fishing?

Im going down to Santa Barbara next week and was wondering if anyone has experience fishing at El Capitan state park

There's a hanging reef with giant kelp bed off El Cap.  I had very good fishing for Calico and barracuda there one year.  (Later in the summer, though).

Cool......I took a lok at the chart.  The reef I'm thinking of is a little bit South, called Naples.  It big.  It good.

I think Naples is a limited take MLPA now.......

I think it allows some spearfishing for pelagics but that is all.
The loss of Naples as a fishing reef was a huge hit to the cenCal fishery.

Not much else down there. Bounceball trolling for halis used to be our go-to to cover all the sand.

Stay away from the Napals MLPA but you do have a good chance at a big fish in that area this time of year. Bring some squid and if your not getting anything fishing normal fish just strips of squid and smaller swimbaits 3-4 inchers.

Bring a surfboard, if you're so inclined. El Cap point lights up with the right solid swell .

yeah only in spring with a West Swell.....Souths are blocked by channel islands.

Forgot about those danged islands... I last surfed it in the winter during a solid WNW groundswell. Mmmmmmm......

wanted to surf but the forecast is dismal, a lot of wind and no swell. oh well, muchas cervezas para mi!

Lame... Oh well.

You can surf Jalama to the north, and Ventura to the south, both out of the wave shadow from Channel Islands.  Flatties are a good be anywhere in that NSB area.  Check out Refugio just up the road, or Gaviota for that matter.......
