Hi all I'm heading down to jalama to camp for a week starting Father's Day. I've never been kayak fishing down there and wondering if anyone has any info on the place. It's located just a few miles north of pt conception.

Never launched there, but know the beach.
Pretty exposed, so plan on surf launching. The winds there are treacherous, so be aware.
Figure if the weather & swell let you get out, you are lucky. I've seen reports of decent lingcod & rockies from there.

I know how bad the wind gets there it's pretty gnarly! I figured if I'm going there might as well give it a shot if Mother Nature lets me. I was also curious on what to fish for as well.

There have been a few yak fish trips that took off from Jalama, but generally it is considered too windy. If you are going to be there anyway, I would certainly bring a kayak, just in case you get a good day.
Even though it is remote, I can't think of any huge fish tales. The last report I read (some years ago) was rockfish and lingcod. With all the sand beach, I'd bring a perch/surfcast setup & try that if the day precludes kayaking.

The few times I've launched out of Jalama it was like launching out of Ocean Beach. Hope you've been practicing your surf launch and landings. Most definitely stow your gear or else it will a Jalama beach yard sale.

Jalama has never been a go to fishing destination for me it was just one of those meet up and camp with friends type place. Always brought my kayak with me and explored the beautiful coastline. Caught only one halibut to 30in for the four times fishing that place. Always had a great time paddling on the skunk days.

I have fished Jamala 2 x

IF YOU CAN GET OUT TO THE REEF IT IS AMAZING,

that said it it has about the roughest surf around. the beach is right on the front of point conception and gets the full brunt of the pacific swell, BE SURE TO CHECK THE WEATHER, swell or wind can both come up and be dangerous.  There is no trick to it, you just have to be lucky enough to find a day with less than 5 ft swell which are few and far between. I would plan on having Refugio,( about 20 miles south) as a back up, it is much more protected and launchable.

The Reef I fished is about 2-3 miles south of the launch, and maybe 1/2 mile off shore. It was easy meat fishing, both times i ended up with 35-40 lb limits of rock fish to 4-5 lbs in ~90 minutes.

I've been camping at jalama for 15 yrs on surf trips so I know the coast pretty well there. I figured it would be a rough launch if there's swell. Refugio sounds like good easy back up plan. I've got a week to explore the coast.
