Pretty cool. What I'm most impressed about is the fact that his crate and poles remained attached to the kayak.

I keep a small section of line in my PFD for that...I dread that AI flipping with ama attached (unlikely but man it will suck flipping it back over even if they are pulled in

I've never had my yak turn turtle, but I think that if I couldn't manage to push up on one side far enough to flip it back over (remember, I have a real life jacket on to keep me buoyant and allow me to push up), that I could use my paddle. with the leash attached to the side handle, in the same way he used his ski handle.   I also have a pretty strong rope attached to my fish clip, and have it tied to the other side handle, so it also could be used.  Though I'd probably be traumatized by my poles(not tethered), gaff, bait and, especially, my lunch cooler sinking or floating away.

He has on a manual inflate PFD.  Only inflates IF you are conscious & can pull the rip cord.

IMO it's just one more thing to get in the way of everything else on the kayak.
IMO it just something else to get tangled up in if things don't go exactly right.
More than likely if you flip like that the conditions are going to be pretty bad. The less stuff flopping around in a big swell the better.
I'm not saying this is a bad idea, just not for me.

^ pretty much sums it up for me too Tote.

Sometimes folks are unable to recover without an aid, which I think is fine if they learn to use it.
I consider the stirrup rescue (it has been around for  along time) to be an "after all else fails" type of recovery. If you (or your partner) are too cold or tired after a couple failed attempts, these things can help, even in an assisted situation.

Even if you don't bring a specific stirrup setup, it is a great trick to know since in a pinch you can make one out of any piece of rope.

Patent Pending and 20 bucks for something you could make from stuff lying around, LOL.
