The drysuits are super expensive....as an alternative i came upon this goretex coverall for a fraction of the price.
what do you guys think, if i wore my wetsuit under this waterproof coverall. Has anyone tried this method?

I think you would be really cold if you went in the water.  It would work for splashes and rain but you will as soon as you went in water it would cause some level of evaporative cooling.   You would likely need to remove it after you went in.  The construction of these dry suits is quite different.  You can swim in them and stay quite reasonably dry.

Look into separate pieces like the kokatat tempest pants.  Might be able to go with dry bottoms and dry top for under $300 if you shop around.

I'm wondering what your goal is? If you're getting cold in the wind while wearing your wetsuit, this might be an option ... but I agree with Eric, you should try swimming in the thing before actual use. When I used a wetsuit I just kept a cheap windbreaker with me.

This is something I came across that is a little less expensive than others

I appreciate the neoprene neck in my Stohlquist suit, which this O'neill has. If you do the drysuit, don't forget to consider what will keep you warm inside, the drysuit won't on it's own.

Just wear a 3mm wetsuit and you should be fine. No reason to go over kill with that. You will be a lot safer and comfortable. 5mm -7mm if you plan on jumping off and grabbing some abs while your at it.  :smt007

I just wear a 3mm FJ and wind poof/bait proof pants and a paddle jacket. Layer the top half depending on temp.

If in warmer body's of water but the wind is the factor these are a good option. I love mine good for mornings on the lake when there is a good layer of fog or night time.

The tempest pants with a good dry top is probably one of the best options.

Back in my wetsuit days, there were many times I wore a shell and rainpaints over my wetsuit.  It cuts the wind and evaporative cooling effect.  At $69 for that suit, I'd say go for it.
