The Stanislaus River just went up to 1500 cfs out of Goodwin Dam and goes up to 3000 cfs next Monday and stays at that level for about a month. Has anyone kayaked/fished the river below Knights Ferry or below Oakdale at the 3000 cfs level? Just want to know if it is safe or worth the fishing effort.

I do a lot of work on the Stanislaus as a fisheries biologist. I also like to fish the stan (see my public report for  At 3,000 cfs the river is extremely difficult to fish from a kayak. The main problem arises when you have a fish hooked, there are no eddies at this flow that you can pull into so you can land your catch without worrying about what you might be floating into and at this flow there are lots of hazards (large logjams and flooded overhanging vegetation). I recommend waiting until next week, the river is supposed to drop to 1,000 cfs by Tuesday.
