I will be heading out to lake Natoma (hazel & hwy 50) Saturday morning to do some fishing then practice self rescue before I head back out on the ocean again. I will plan on launching around 7am to work the morning bite then around 10 or 11 practice self rescue with and without gear. I have never tipped and hopefully never will but I know the odds are I will at some point an I want to be ready.

If there is anyone who is really solid at helping others learn proper self rescue technique that would be willing to come out and give some pointers that would be awesome. Also be willing to cover other safety topics.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to come out for some fish & rescue FnR. If your planning on getting out in the salt this year and haven't done any self rescue training this will be a great time to come out and practice. You and others that are with you OTW will be glad you took the time to do this. If you are gonna come out to practice self rescue make sure you have a wet suit as the water is extremely cold.

Hope to see others there.

I know a Free launch spot in Rollins. Bass are hitt'n and the water is not tooooo cold. Good area to practice in... I'll be in Class all weekend but if no $$ and fishing is in the vocabulary... Think Rollins. EZ launch and FREE Baby!!!
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Here are a couple pointers that I learned when I did my first self rescue.

Go to the front of the boat to flip it back over, grab the nose and just flip.  It really was that simple with one arm.

To get back on the kayak I pushed the nose of it into the water and climbed back on that way from the very front.  I then just scooshed back to my seat.

It was a lot easier than I thought it would be.  Just do not try to right the boat or get back on from the middle.

I would join you to show you but I am leading a fishout for my club.

Good luck and just stay calm.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

I spoke with Jeff at California Canoe & Kayak about some loaner wet suits for people looking to join in the self rescue but may not have a wet suit yet and he is willing to help us out.

So if you are interested in using one of these wet suits for the day give Jeff a call at 96-851-3600. He has few few in each size so if you are serious call soon to reserve.

Just do not try to right the boat or get back on from the middle

This really depends on the individual. Flipping a kayak over is easier from either end but its fairly easy for me to right my kayak from the middle. It's easier for me to re enter from the center of the boat too. The key is to keep you head in the center of the boat and roll your legs in. Don't try to place your knee on the side and hop in, you'll go right off the other side. Again depends on the individual, practice practice practice!

I'll be there. This will be a good time to practice self rescue with a group. I hope to see lots of heads out there for this hook up.

Rider, excellent idea - I wish I could be there, but I'll be paddling the moke that day!  :smt003

I participated in Dan's self  and "T" rescue class at Crab Fest, and I can honestly say it was one of the most influential experiences of my paddling life.

You never know when you're going to need to those self rescue skills - and practicing is the first step in keeping your cool when it happens. It's the people that get panicked that are in the most danger.

Never let go of your paddle, make sure your vest is on correctly -tight and fitted!
Practice until you feel totally unnerved by rolling over.

Everyone needs to practice and get a feel for what to do. Maybe we can a few more rescue hook-ups going this summer!
