So a year or two ago I was driving though the industrial portion of Placerville when I saw a merchant had these used platform trucks for sale. $30 each or 2 for $50.
The wheels alone are worth $30 on each cart so I snagged two. (wish I got 4)
http://www.foodservicedirect.com/product.cfm/p/226263/Wesco-Aluminum-Open-Deck-U-Boat-Platform-Truck-23.75-x-66-x-49-inch.htm
I used them to hold my storage tubs in the shop. That way I can easily move them around as need be.
Since I got rid of the kayak trailer I decided to use one for a base as a kayak storage rack in the garage.
I took the middle casters off. It was designed to turn a 360 with no side to side movement. Plus the middle casters were larger than the outside casters so it rocked a little from side to side.
With the middle ones removed I can easily move this in any direction I want.
Since the handles slide into 1'' holes in the base and lift right out I used 1'' pipe from Home Depot as the backbone of the rack. Threaded a connector on the end of the pipe and another 5'' piece of pipe screwed into that and it slid right into the hole w/o falling through.
I found commercial shelving brackets at Habitat For Humanity for $0.50 each. A right and left one fit perfectly on a 2x4. I think the 2x4 is easier on a kayak than metal.
I wanted to put the Adventure above where the Revo is now but the garage height would not allow it. This would have lined it up with the rack on top of my vehicle. Oh well. If I'm taking that one out it's because a second person is going with me and they can help lift it.
It's set up so I can wheel it onto the driveway.
I just got a Hullavator rack so the Revo lines up with the height of the rack.
The PVC is to keep the kayak from sliding off. It slides up and down as I need it.
I wheel the cart next to the vehicle, push the PVC down and slide the kayak onto the Hullavator.
It's that simple.
When I get home I wheel the cart up to the vehicle, slide one side onto the rack and push up on the PVC, slide the other side onto the rack and push up on the PVC..done.
Since I already had the base I didn't have to do any welding.

Makes for quick work when pressure washing too.
Draining the inside is virtually effortless.

Great job on the new yak storage rack Tote. I've been thinking of how to make a rack for three kayaks that would save some room in my garage.

Nice work Mike!  I like how easy it is to drain the inside.
