I use the tether (2nd on your post) for my VHF. So far so good, can't complain. The thing is well built. A lil pricey though, but worth it.

I saw a selection of those over at Monterey Bay Kayaks in Moss Landing.  Look pretty nice.

FYI, I've been using the Hobie retractor on my lip grippers for several years now with no problems. The Boomerang pliers have a built in retractor that also works well.

Is your VHF a full size or compact??? I would like to have one for mine, but its a full size.

old phone cord with loops on each end. One end zipties to the rod, the other has a clip on it.
But I've been eyeing the heavy mono leashes some the HI guys use.

I've got a retractable tether on my pliers and whatever brand it is is has been solid for 2 seasons now.

I have the Icom-72. Normally, I clip my vhf o. one of the pockets of my pfd. Tether is just insurance since it doesn't float.
