newbie question. Does anybody fish at night with kayak? Is it possible or simply too dangerous?

I've never done it, but I have talked with another valley local about night fishing for stripers at Hogan. He suggests putting lights in/on the water. Sounds like fun  to me.

Night time paddling is very cool. I've done it in the South Bay a lot, out at Linda Mar once, and in freshwater more times than I can remember.

By law, you need a light for signaling. And that's it. Unless you are at anchor, then you need to display a white light visible 360 degrees.

Choose your occasions for doing this with some care though. I'd hate to be outside, in the dark, at some place like Bean Hollow for instance...

Regards,
Scott

When the summer days are blazing hot :angryfire:, night fishing is welcome relief.Try bass fishing at night with a portable black light and flourescent mono. It's a blast, the mono looks like a large bendy glo-stick.You also have a good chance at some big fish. They will come up super shallow in the dark.A little moonlight is nice to have.Once I did'nt check the phase and it was pitch black, not cool when your light goes out! :smt009 Bring spares, battery powered led running light in a rod holder works good, not too much glare.Use a headlamp for tackle changes etc.

A few years back...Chuck,Stuart,Fred,BobN and I paddled ALL NIGHT LONG inside the HMB Harbor - we were dropping crab traps and checking them every hour.....while Bob was cooking his famous HMB Chili by the shoreline = GOOD TIMES  :smt002

I've done night paddles in San Diego.

What we would do is rig some sort of white light for the back of the boat and then hang red and green lightsticks off the nose of the yak.

Pulling hoops for bugs.....good fun.  Just be extra careful.

If anyone is into it I've always wanted to do a night DIVE at Linda Mar. Would be a fairly short-notice thing as the water would have to be super calm (the way it gets once or twice a summer).
To answer the likely question, white sharks don't feed at night.
