I was wondering if rockfish actually co-mionle with other Rockfish? Such as a Olive Rockfish with a Kelp Rockfish  or Copper Rockfish with a Canary Rockfish? Is it true that Bass co-mingle? Or do they stay within the same type. It is a big ocean out there and a fish could get lonely!  :smt003

Thanks
Jim

Yeah as far as schooling fish I've seen blacks with blues and kelpies and olives all mixed up on many occasions in shallow water.

On the bottom they obviously do the same because of the variety that is often caught in a single kelp hole like gopher, b&y, and kelpies. In deep water I've experienced a greater variety of fish like olive, boccaccio, vermilion, canary, copper, gopher and blue RF all a few handle turns off the bottom but no clue if any of them are shooting the shit  :smt005.

+1.

Yeah Jimbo, I've often seen a big school of blues with a few olives or blacks lurking in amongst them, and like Tim said once you get down in the holes it is not rare to see cracks with black/yellows, gophers, kelpies etc all together.

Check out this pic fuzz took for a good example of interspecies RF comingling.   :smt004

Jim

ps...if you want to see me shoot the olive in the picture (and a few of his buddies) from that school of his blues check out 1:56-4:11 of this vid. You can also see some kelpies in and amongst the blues.  :smt004

Here's a pretty good representation of co-mingling.
From this one rock, you can see 5 species of rockfish and a couple bonus perch species.   :smt001

I was really wondering if they actually breed with each other since I know they swim together. It is more a question as too the fish cross breeding with the different type of  rock fishes.

I seem to recall Dr Milton Love found that they did indeed interbreed on occasion. Not positive on that though.
At depth I would think even even a rockfish would have a hard time identifying a vermilion or canary from a yelloweye.
Over 60ft it would all be like a an after hours nightclub. Love the one you're with!
