I went out in HMB crabbing this am ... It was ok!
Then given the low tide, I picked up few mussels. I got some really big (5-6"), and I was wondering if it is safe to consume mussels from HMB harbor?
Thanks,
C-

If you got them inside the harbor I'd be cautious water smells like diesel in there

"According to the CDPH website, the annual mussels quarantine is issued each year for the California coastline typically from May through October.  Commercially harvested shellfish are excluded from the quarantine because additional steps are taken to assure shellfish entering the marketplace are free of toxins and safe for consumers. It's not May yet but it's getting close.  Your call...

I wouldn't recommend eating them from that area.
I eat mussels from HMB all of the time but not from the harbor.
I harvest them from rocky beaches during low tide. If you don't eat your harbor mussels you could always use them for perch bait.
I you do eat them I wouldn't make a habit of eating them from there.

Even when in season make sure to call the quarantine hotline at
1-800-553-4133 to make sure there are no closures in the area that you are harvesting from due to bio toxins.

To think there's plenty of them under the old pier.
