Hey guys, I was thinking about trying to go striper fishing somewhere in the Delta on Monday. I hear its hot now. I'm leaving from Marin County and don't mind driving 1-2 hours. Any ideas where to put out with the yak?

Thanks!

I wrote this some time ago for a Meetup Group I belonged to. It was intended for recreational kayakers, but there are some great fishing opportunities here, too. Enjoy!

Kayaking in the northern Delta:

In the northern Delta, you can put in at Wimpy's Marina, New Hope Landing, or Walnut Grove Marina and circumnavigate Dead Horse Island, or paddle up Snodgrass Slough and into Railroad Cut and then on up to The Meadows or head into Lost Slough and take Middle Slough toward the Cosumnes River Preserve. From Snodgrass Slough, you can take the Cross Delta Channel through the gates (when open) into the Sacramento River at Walnut Grove. Go downstream a little ways and poke around in Georgiana Slough.

From the same put-ins you can paddle up the Mokelumne River to Cosumnes River Preserve and back, or do a shuttle down North Mokelumne to B&W Resort or down South Mokelumne to Tower Park.

From Cosumnes River Preserve, you can turn right into the Cosumnes River (leaving the Preserve) for a short distance to the Mokelumne River, then paddle upstream for an out-and-back, or do a shuttle down the Mokelumne to one of the put-ins mentioned above.

If you ask nicely at the Boon Dox Liquor store in Walnut Grove, they'll let you put in at their dock across the street to explore the Sacramento River or Georgiana Slough, or you can do a shuttle down Georgiana Slough to B&W Resort. You can also do this from the Walnut Grove Public Dock, but it’s harder to carry a kayak up and down the stairs.

From B&W Resort, you can paddle up Georgiana Slough and back, or up the North Mokelumne, or down the Mokelumne to the San Joaquin River for an out-and-back or shuttle to one of the resorts.

Always carry your Delta waterproof Fish-n-Map and, if possible, a GPS unit.  Whenever changing from one waterway to another, look back to see what the turn is going to look like from the other direction. Study the tides carefully and always be aware of tidal current while paddling. It’s not uncommon in the Delta for rivers and sloughs to flow upstream.

Keep your camera handy for your report and any time you’d like some company, just post a note in Hookups!

If you want to bait fish, use live bullheads, split tails, grass shrimp or even frozen anchovies. If you want to toss some plugs, a chrome and blue Rat-L-Trap is a good choice.
