Looking forward to spending weekends camping and kayaking at some lakes as the weather warms up. Thinking of dropping a crawdad trap as I head out fishing and picking it up on the return. Anyone else doing this? Just wondering if it worth doing are not.

It can be worth it if the area you are in holds alot of crawdads. I have used traps but i have fun rolling rocks or diving for them and I do better that way.

Tried it the other day on Melones. No luck. Think you need to let them sit over night. Haven't tried it in 25 years but remember getting sacks full as a kid. Grandpa used to also give us a square of bacon and we'd use kite string to tie it to a stick and try to pull them up out of the rocks like a hitch hiking Ling. Don't remember actually catching any as most let go half way to the surface. He may have just done it to see if we were dumb enough to try it  :smt003
And you could hear me screaming a mile away as I was headed out for the door....

I dropped two at Lake Don Pedro earlier this week.  Didn't get anything.  I thought I picked a pretty good spot, back in a cove with water coming in from a creek, boulders and trees.  I was too lazy to try other spots.

Crawdads stay pretty well hunkered down during the day, but at night they come out and move around.  Striper fishing Lake Mendo at night time, I have seen 100's at a time moving around in shallow water with no real shelter in sight.  I think for a trap to be effective, an overnight soak may be in order.

What kind of bait are you running? I do ok on overnight soaks. I believe per the regs you need to check and pull your traps daily. I think it is still a bit early depending on the lake to get a lot of action. Also I find you need to run a fair amount of bait as they are crafty and can escape most traps given some time but are voracious eaters so as long as they have bait to chew on they will hand around. Good luck.
