The entire week looks good ... light wind and small swell.

I'll likely be hitting it tomorrow, but can go other days in the week too.  Who's game?

There were still good numbers of sardines in the harbor as of two days ago if you are looking for something to do during the soak.
They are here early this year.

Just saw this post.  Wednesday is looking good.  Any chance you might be heading out then?

Is that what this guy is catching in his net?

I've seen him out there twice, and seen people walking away from the harbor later (where they sell fresh fish off boats) with bags of what looked like sardines/herring

I'm going Monday. Crabbing and trying for cali halibut. Never been out to HMB. This should be fun.

Be careful.  The forecast doesn't look too good for Monday.

Forecast I saw for HMB on Monday has primary swells at 5.5' with winds 5-10mph. Semi glassy/semi bumpy in the morning with NNW winds 5-10mph. Bumpy/semi bumpy conditions for the afternoon with the winds shifting to the NW. With wind picking up in the afternoon to 12mph. Rain forecast for possible Tuesday/wed...

What was I missing? Maybe I'm checking the wrong weather channel for my info. Thanks for your help... do you have any website recommendations for me for checking forecasts?

Thanks again!

NOAA local ...

Monday: NW wind 8 to 14 kt. Mostly sunny. Mixed swell...NW 5 ft at 8 seconds and SW 2 ft at 15 seconds. Wind waves 1 to 2 ft.

It's a combination of the following things that has me concerned.  The wind is a little high.  The NW swell has a fairly low period.  And that SW swell will churn things up.

Allen-

Thanks for helping me out. I loves this forum!!! I wont have tons of fishing equipment (crab trap and 1 pole for a 'hail Mary' attempt at halibut) and will be dressed for the part. I believe I have all the required safety equipment. I'm going out knowing that taking a dip is a definite possibility.

That being said - I'll stay close to the harbor and jetty wall. I think I really need to get out and build some experience on the ocean. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! I'm wondering about where to launch and parking too. Hopefully I'll get out around 8am tomorrow.

Thanks again-
-Murf

Only thing I can add is don't be afraid to turn around after you paddle out to the mouth. I've done it before with no shame, just enjoy the paddle back in. Maybe try along the inside of the jetty for your halibut if you can find somewhere that looks decent. Remember that rockfish is out of season though. Also, unless you have a radio I really wouldn't heat outside if it looks bad.

Best thing I can say is I'll let you know next time I'm heading out of HMB to go crabbing. Always good to have someone watching your back.

They now have a small craft advisory for Monday until 3 am. Rain is in the forecast for Tuesday, but the seas and wind aren't as bad. I'm thinking maybe I'll hold off until Tuesday. Its too long to drive for to cancel when I get there...dang...
