I shoot:
Midhandle woodguns anywhere from 48" - 72"
Euro wood guns 110-130cm
Railguns 75 - 140 cm
Pneumatics 70 - 100cm
Polespears 4-8 ft
As you may have already figured it out, most of the guns I own I do not shoot very often, So, a fair question to ask would be where do you plan to hunt and what your budget is?
If freediving NorCal, Euro 60-90 or pneumatics 55-85 would do.
If I was to pick one gun for NorCal it would be a 75cm euro, if you're plannig to buy two fromr NorCal, the second one would be a 90cm euro gun for those stellar days. If you want to get into the Zen, get yourself a good quality polespear.
.... now if your really don't want to go wrong, follow Fuzz's advice, he is Da Man !

Thanks for the link Cha. I appreciate it.

D-man, thanks for the info. I am planning to put a few guns in my shop and wanted to get some input from someone with some hands on experience, so thanks again.  Any idea if we have a local gun mfg. in the 707?

I had a lot of fun with a Mares Cyrano, it is not very long, maybe 2'. I think it is a 180 but I am not sure. It has a trident tip on it (all points in a row), it is fast to load.

Another favorite for the North Coast is a Riffe. it is about 34" long. I actually had them make it for me years ago because they did not have a short gun. I had them make it out of purple heart... one of my favorite hard woods. Now I see they even make a smaller gun, and they are making guns out of paduk now.

But mostly I use a pole spear. Why don't you try that out for a while, it's a cheap way to start out.

Good luck with the hunt!

For Nor Cal, I would suggest any gun between 60cm and 90cm with a 75cm probably being ideal.

I have a few Omer rail guns, a 70 and 80cm and I really like both of them. Very accurate.
I also have a 95cm Mares Phantom. The thing shoot like a laser but a little too long for hole hunting and low viz.
