Stolen yacht runs aground at Pacifica, 3 arrested
The Associated Press

PACIFICA, Calif.—Police arrested three people on Monday who were trapped on a stolen, 82-foot yacht that ran aground on a Northern California beach.

Two men and a woman were picked up by Pacifica police hours after the sailboat "Darlin" got stuck in shallow water at low tide, KGO-TV reported ( http://bit.ly/15tifzL).

After television news reports of the grounding aired Monday, the boat's owner called police to report it stolen, Sausalito police Sgt. Bill Fraass said.

"We do have thefts of vessels throughout the area, but the theft of a vessel of this size is uncommon," Fraass said.

The sailboat was trapped at Pacifica State Beach in shallow water at low tide and unable to get back out to sea.

A few wetsuit-clad surfers paddled out in the frigid water near the grounded vessel as its hull was battered by 4-to-5-foot waves.

Police and the Coast Guard surrounded the boat and managed to get the trio off without any injuries.

The boat's owner was traveling to Pacifica to work with authorities to have it removed from the beach.

The Coast Guard said there were no signs of pollution from the boat.
