Hello,

So after owning my kayak for a year now, I have become bored with my 10.5ft boat. I ordered a 30lb  thrust motor from walmart; took it apart, and installed the motor and shaft to the transom, ran rope to  my foot pegs and allowed them run free for steering. Went to O'Reilly's autoparts and bought a pretty good size marine deep cycle battery, as well as scotty inflatable sponsons to compensate for the weight ordered from the web. The unit looks pretty legit I must say. My question is....   Does anybody have any horror stories for me from doing somthing like this. I know its common to minkota a kayak but what should I expect.  I am planning a maiden tomorrow and if everything works out gna go fishing on Sunday.  Thanks in advance for your input.

I saw some guy on a similar rig about a month ago while crabbing in HMB. It was foggy with about 150 foot vis and all I could here is a motor approaching me. When he finally broke through the fog it looked like he was riding on a contraption from the movie "Water world". He was also crabbing and seemed to be getting around easily. It did look a little sketchy though.

Be careful out there and make sure you will be able to self rescue especially since it sounds like you will be by yourself. Unless you have a buddy that has one too   :smt001

I used the setup that "Quiet Man" down in San Diego uses on his fish n dive.  But I set it up on a P15.  Battery weight is a major problem and makes the P15 unstable.
You do get some strange looks from people as you go sailing by.  I just locked the trolling motor in a straight position and steered with the rudder.  The fish n dive has a much wider hull and is rated for a lot more weight so it must handle this setup better.  Still prefer to paddle or pedal.
