Sometimes posts that were made by members who leave, show up as from Guest...I think?

Big Jim is correct.

Took me awhile to figure it out but when I saw familiar names of people I know have departed, I was able to put it together.

Deleting an account makes the account go dark.  But does it revert each prior post from that account to a "guest" post?

I think so. Look up any one of Scwafish's old posts.

yeah, his posts now each say:

scwafish
Guest

but it doesn't just say "Guest," with no scwafish.

I think that is how it would be.  Old username and Guest.  Is there somewhere that it actually just says Guest?

Yup.  That is someone who cancelled their account.
