Has anyone done any fishing at Doran Beach area at this time of the year?  I would like to do some fishing while I'm there for the crabbing tourney.  I was wondering what type of fish are around/legal at that time.  Any perch or jack smelts?

I would go for the Hali  :smt001

Should be tons of jacksmelt in the bay and especially inside the harbor.

There's also occasional herring, sardines, and mackerel....but mostly big ass jacksmelt. Take a sabiki tipped with squid and I'll pretty much guarantee that you'll get some smelt.

If you want perch then try shrimp baits around the jettys, but be careful 'cause you'll also catch rockfish, lings, and greenling. There's mostly striped perch with the occasional black perch.

If you go inside the harbor then you can target huge redtails, rubberlips, and pileperch around any of the docks or old piers. There's gigantic perch under the Spud Point pier, but they are notoriously hard to catch.

I wouldn't waste time lookin' for halis this time of year.

Also be aware of where the MLPA boundaries are.
