Thanks to Eugene / Paddlefish's generosity I spent a good portion of last night mico filletting Herring. While the wife was looking up pickled Herring recipes she came accross this on a Northwest fishing forum.

Herring use for Chinook Salmon
First and foremost: Quality bait. You only want top quality MALE herring in the 1-2yr age class. For some reason, salmon do not like female herring. If you have herring that show any eggs or milt inside them whatsoever, just throw those away...they are way too mushy to troll and are not even worth fishing for sturgeon. To determine which are non-spawning males, it's generally best to count the caudal fin rays and apply the Mylenberg-Lansky Ray-to-Gill Raker ratio. I only use herring that score between 2.3 and 3.3. Also, I have a theory that spring salmon vastly prefer herring harvested North of Whidbey island (more freshwater inputs), or alternatively herring from SE alaska. Or better yet Atlantic herring if you can find them. Fall fish aren't as picky.

Personally I'm not going to go to that much trouble sexing my Herring. For me it goes on the hook and over the side. However maybe this is a secret of the AOTY Big Dogs. What do you think. Is this a bunch of Pig Hooey or ??

That's why Salmon school up ... so they can collectively add & count to make sure the Herring meets their numerical threshold.

Well, it's my day off and the sun is shining but I gotta have lunch with my sister and talk about Dad, (87).  So with some time to spare I clicled on this sex thing..........

I did do a Google search on Mylenberg-Lansky Ray-to-Gill Raker ratio, and the only hit I got was this article. Then I went to the link you put in the post and saw the whole post,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Oh hell, maybe he knows what hes talking about, seems kinda tounge in cheek, but it still leaves us with Is this a bunch of Pig Hooey or ??

The spawned out fish do make a better, firmer bait.
