I am going to HMB this wed through sun. I have never been there while mavericks is going.  Is it safe to drop crab pots outside the harbor?

Mavericks is over. Why would you want to go out when the swells (and waves) are huge? Double check the weather forecast.

It was 70 and flat calm thru most of the weekend. The swell that causes Mavericks is of a different sort (look online).
With that being said, there is a front coming in on Wednesday, so keep your eyes on the forecasts...

Thanks Iverfish, I have only camped at HMB once before. I thought that might be the case, otherwise mavericks would have been found earlier.  If it is rough outside the jetty, is there an area inside the harbor that is good to drop some traps? I normally camp and crab out of Bodega, but our friends moved to Capitola and my wife wants to vacation near them. I told her it would be ok if I am able to crab and fish HMB.

Inside the Harbor by the sail boats  seems to be out of the PBer's way.  That said don't expect much more than rock crabs.

Thanks for the info. I assume it would be better to get outside the jetty then. Looking at the chart, most of the area outside the jetty is around 30' feet deep. Does it all have about the same productivity? Are sanddabs an option currently?

When do u plan to go?
Going Fishing?
Winds from the south, hook in
    the mouth.
Wind from the east, bite the least.
Wind from the north, further off.
Wind from the west, bite the
    best.

Don't set in the channel, which is outside the jaws and approximately due south (slightly SE).  Look for the green buoy to the south.  Boats running out need to hook around this.  If you find yourself getting too many rock crabs, you are too close to the jetty.  The whole general area can produce, but don't be hesitant to spread your pots around looking for more productive sites.
