San luis Obispo is like the forgotten bastard child, not quite North, and not quite South (well nothing like South really). Does anyone know of a bb like this place that covers the SLO area too?

Great!

I'm looking for fishin buddies down here. A while back I had an interesting experience solo fishing off Cambria that ended a long, lonely, cold swim... It was the type of experience that gets you thinking that maybe it would be preferable to have some back-up.

I generally fish the area between Spooners Cove up to Willow Creek.

Never fished SLO - what's to catch there? And what's bitting there right now?

I was out two days ago, off Cambria again, caught a Ling, 2 vermillions and what I think was a large Kelp Bass in about an hour and a half. Out there it is mostly Ling, cabs, various rockfish right now. Halibut is more likely to the south. The "salmon" sign has recently been hung at Vig's Landing, so they're out there somewhere but I really don't know much about salmon fishing here yet.

You're lucky you get to rockfish - we still have to wait till the end of the month  :smt011

How about some pictures? Any size to the Lings and vermilions?

How's the surf launch - or do you launch from a Harbor?

Rock fishing is excellent right now. Plenty of action even if you had to throw most of them back. The Kelp Bass was easily over 20",  Vermilion's were both around 17", the Ling was about 28". Nothing record breaking, but definitely fillet-able. My wife did get some pictures when I got back home but I don't have access to them at the moment.

Usually a surf launch, although there are many sheltered launch spots. Avila Bay, Morro, and then there's Spooners Cove, which is always calm.... till you round the point, where it can become a mix-master if conditions aren't fairly flat. Spooners Cove dumps you out on the end of Point Buchon which is totally exposed to the South and the NW swell, but it is hardly ever fished. Cayucos and Cambria are mostly sheltered from the NW swell and are not fished that much, same with San Simeon.

I'm sure that you are familiar with the conditions at points futher north - Willow Creek, Limekiln, etc. - Big Sur conditions.

I was camping at Morro Bay last weekend, but unfortunately, did get out to fish.  I'd like to try for halibut out of Avila Beach and/or rockfish out of Montana de Oro...

I'd love to move to SLO but finding a job would be difficult.

Hey I just graduated from Poly in April I fished down there for 5 years (3 from a kayak). The fishing down there can be awsome in the summer. If you have any questions just shoot me a line, and Ill try to help you out

Would like to hook up with you down that way some time.  I stopped in Shell Beach last weekend and asked about fishing at the kayak shop right next to the highway.  They didn't seem to have a lot of informaiton.  I have a place in Orcutt so I am down there frequently and would feel like the trip would be more worthwhile if I could combine it with fishing.

I listened to a radio show call Fish Rap from Santa Barbara last weekend and there was a guy on there talking about kayak fishing at Montana de Oro.

I did fish San Simeon Memorial Day weekend and despite the local "advice", four of us caught nothing worth mentioning.  Guess it's like every place, gotta know what the locals do.  I'm thinking that SLO county is the undiscovered jewel.
