Dear Mr. XXXXXXXXXXXX,

Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. We appreciate the opportunity to address your inquiry on the roof capacity for the Toyota Prius and Prius v.

We apologize, however the information you are seeking is not included in the published specifications. Toyota does not recommend carrying or transporting items on the roof of your vehicle.

Please note: Any damage that results from exceeding the capacities recommended by Toyota may not be covered under warranty. Please refer to your Owner’s Warranty Information booklet for more information regarding warranty coverage.

If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us at http://www.toyota.com/help/.

Sincerely,

I never get less than 25 MPG with my 2011 Outback and most of my driving is not freeway driving.  With my Hobie Revo on top I get around 25 MPG on the freeways.  Without the yak the freeway MPG is usually 30 - 31.  I have the 2.5 liter 4-banger.

I'd be concerned with the effect of a cross-wind on the roof-top kayak(s), especially if they are placed on their side(s).   On my old small Toyota truck, a 15-20 mph crosswind at freeway speed hitting the cab-high shell would have me weaving more than I thought safe, but opening the shell's side windows would allow me to go straight.
I carry my P 15 top up on my Accord with no problems even with the usual crosswind near Sand City.
I use at a front and rear tie down unless I'm just using surface streets for a few blocks, then just the front tie down.
You need a margin of error for the unexpected - sudden need to swerve, etc.

I have an '07 prius and have taken my OK scrambler 11 as far as Montana. I use a thule rack (just the mounts and bars. Place the kayak upside down on the rack use the over under method to strap to the bars and tether the nose and rear to the undercarriage. Millage goes from 45 to 40/42 when carrying.
