My brother asked me to post his Smithsonian blog up here. Good reading, especially for anyone who's ever run out of food miles or days away from civilization...

May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Hiking to my secret fishing spot over the years, and staying for as long as a week at a time, one thing that was a special treat (which I would NEVER have at home) was powered milk.
If I took someone new to the spot they would laugh at me. By day 3 they LOVED it.

+1.  Milkman powdered lowfat milk was the best, but I can't find it anymore.

Boy, after reading this i'm never going to say i'm starving again  :smt044

" Steaming sherried crab overflows flaky pie shells bedded on rice pilaf and toasted almonds. Fresh muffins puff out of pans. Melted butter drools down the sides of warm, broken bread. The aroma of baking pies and brownies wafts through the air. Chilly mounds of ice cream stand firm in my mind’s eye."

Wow, i'm not sure what I would be dreaming about.... but that sounds pretty damn good right now!  :smt044  And you want powdered milk???  :smt005

Hummm... upon further reflection I think that I would end up dreaming about the Albion Potluck  :smt007

in the movie "Castaway" there is a great scene where Tom Hanks has been rescued from a deserted island.  He is at the return party and looks at a sumptuous seafood feast, and tosses a crab leg aside like a moldy piece of bread.

Haha I remember that scene. They even had sushi as if he hadn't eaten enough raw seafood during his stay!

Your brother is a good writer Andrew. I enjoyed the blog.

When I'm in Asia for a while, I dream about Mexican food.  When I'm in Latin America (again, for a while) I dream of Korean food.  Let's see what I'll crave after extended trips in Africa and Eastern Europe.

After my last backpacking adventure... 6 days out of touch... I could not wait to get out of the Trinity Alps and back down to Redding to scarf a super star at carls jr.  Fat, messy and flavorful... exactly what you don't get from food that comes in a mylar bag.

After 7 months in the Nefud Desert it was pan fried pork chops green beans and rosemary mashed taters, fried chicken red beans and rice and mustard greens or mac n cheese.

After 5 months in Haiti it was anything that wasn't a derivative of french cooking.

Rwanda? Oh please someone please put a plate of anything not vegan or chicken in front of me!
