I'm thinking about going out for sturgeon on my yak soon and want to see if I am reading the weather charts right.  For today 11/26  at about 6am there is an east wind blowing at 4 mph with gusts at about 4 mph. I want to make sure that the wind is blowing me back towards the launch when, so if I'm coming from pittsburg I want to paddle west towards martinez, to get blown back east? Also, I'm reading the tide tables and for sturgeon, I'd want to fish the outgoing so that would be from 5am to 8am.

Sorry if this has been already asked, just want to make sure I get it right because I know being out there can get nasty, and in a revo 13 that could go from bad to worse quick.

Anything below 10mph is a nice day out in the Pittsburg/Antioch area. Where you planning on fishing? If the wind and current become too much and you're worried about getting back to the launch, hug the shoreline. Or if it's getting to snotty out there, pull the plug and leave. Don't try to stick it out if you're uncomfortable. Just take your time with things.

I'm planning on going out towards the green can buoy? I haven't quite got the navigation part planned out but launching from the pittsburg free ramp and heading north west is my guess.

And yea gonna get the quick release anchor. I was out on a boat the other day and my buddies friend hooked a sturgeon then they left the anchor but the current brought the buoy down so they kind of had to fish for it, hope that doesnt happen to me. I have about 100 feet of rope.

make sure you use a proper buoy.  not just any buoy will keep your line floating.

the forecast looks decent but i would stay off wednesday.  don't launch from big break when there's big wind, it will stack up the waves outside of the marina.  mcavoy's should be good.  the direction of the tide will control your direction more than the wind.

There's a big outgoing tide in the afternoon so beware of the pittsburg deep water.....you know , one of my favorite spots that has consistantly produced is the west side of broad slough which is accessible.from the antioch launch....its a great spot during big tides because its fairly shallow (20 feet) and the currents are fairly mellow , the best thing is that if the fish are bitting they will bite through the entire tide and not just the  beggining and end.  This spot is fishable in the wind too because the tullies sit on the west edge and block the wind ( so if north winds are called , stay away!).... very good sturgeon habitat...soft clam invested mud.

I've never been out in that particular spot (green can) of Pitt. it does look like a good spot for sturgeon.  BUT it also looks like a really dicey spot as far as depth and current go.  I wouldn't recommend it alone at all and even then not till you have a fair amount of experience anchoring your yak in fast moving water.  Ive gone out of McAvoys allot but never hit that pittsburg spot because of the depth and current and not having a partner to try it there.
