Three of us had a good time, but did not come home with a lot.

First time crabbing...1mm shy of a keeper. Did catch a 20lb star fish on the second soak.

Lings: 7 (0 keepers)

Rock Fish: 6

Water was so clear we could see our bait on the bottom at 30ft.

Pretty freaky when you can see the seals swim by, and your heart stops for a nano second.

This was my first time coming home without my limit. I think it was the clear uber water.

Can we keep rock crabs?

A guy on a nearby boat said the crab were in 120 feet of water, but I only had 100' of line, so we threw it in and hoped for the best at 70' of water. The boat guy showed us his limit that he pulled, and he got them about 3 mile beach at 120'.

Was going to try again this week, but the storm is killing me!

Can we keep rock crabs?

(b) All crabs of the Cancer genus except Dungeness crabs, but including: yellow crabs, rock
crabs, red crabs and slender crabs:
    (1) Open season: All year.
    (2) Limit: Thirty-five.
    (3) Minimum size: Four inches measured by the shortest distance through the body,
from edge of shell to edge of shell at the widest part, except there is no minimum size in Fish
and Game Districts 8 and 9.

A guy on a nearby boat said the crab were in 120 feet of water, but I only had 100' of line, so we threw it in and hoped for the best at 70' of water. The boat guy showed us his limit that he pulled, and he got them about 3 mile beach at 120'.

Thanks for that info.  How far a paddle is 120' from 4 mile beach?

Maybe 2 miles at the very most. There is usually a 1.5 - 3mph drift to the south, so I go straight off 4 mile and end up at "theoretical 3 Mile Beach" (No one calls it that, but it is just south of 4 Mile Beach)  After you drop your pots/hoops you can move back to straight off 4 mile at the same depth and fill your kayak with Sand Dabs in 30 minutes.

I was mostly curious because about 10 days ago, Bayside Marine reported, "The Humbolt Squid fishing was wide open from South Rock to 5 Mile Beach in 70-150 feet of water. The Humbolts are hitting the Ahi Squid jigs 40 feet down."

Sounds about right. Have caught them in that area on a boat, but not about to try on my Yak!

We should meet there one day, the beach is not as bad as people think. There is a ledge that breaks the surf, so you just shoot in and out.
