Im getting out more often, but only fresh water so far. It seems I get one of my reels dunked each time out. Wondering what you guys do for care for a momentary dunk? Ive been taking the spool off and letting air dry in the sun. Have taken reels apart and found no water inside, but I know that it has to be in there, at least a little. Do you take them apart each time out if they get wet or just service them once in a while?

There is no easy answer to this and most guys either services their reels once a year or when something breaks. On the other extreme is Alan Tani. He has his own website, check it out. Here are some reasons to service your reels more frequently...

1. Complete submersion for longer than 1 second
2 . Submesrsion in the surf zone

If any of these happen, I service.

I get mine serviced once a year.  Every time I try to service it myself, I send a few parts flying.

trying to find a local store or tech on the peninsula.  Where do you get your reels serviced?
I have an avet which I sent to the company to be serviced once, they did a great job but would like to deal with a local for quick turn around time.

Avet reels are pretty easy to service. If we hookup for crabbing bring your Avet and I can teach you.

Ive been air drying if it is just a couple of seconds in the water, but I really dunked one so I took it apart. It didnt have any water in its internals. So I guess i will stay with what I have been doing.

Contact Alan Tani http://alantani.com/

I mail them to him.  After each trip I do gently spray freshwater over them then let them dry in the sun or if its damp in the garage.

Since my reels don't get used very much at the moment, the one that does get used, is my surf reel.  I simply remove the spool, then submerge both the reel and spool in a 5 gal bucket filled with running water to flush out any salt, after, shake off the big water drops, then spray reel down with a heavy dose of WD40, the spool gets a good shower of reeleX, a freshwater spray down on the rod then wipe dry and I put the rod & reel away till next use. (My reel is a large shakespear spinning reel)

Your doing the right thing.your in freshwater so I wouldn't worry.just keep doing what your doing and get your reel serviced twice a year
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it
