Many lakes/streams where trout are are open only certain times of the year.  That is what makes it "trout" season.  Also, many of the lakes get to hot in the summer to hold over the trout.  Most of the trout in this state are of the "Put and take" variety.  Check the local regs of where you want to go.

Lake fishing for trout is year round in some lakes (some Lakes like San Pablo and Loch Lomand close down for several months) but "stream fishing for trout" is seasonal. I believe stream fishing (for trout) starts on the first saturday of April - don't know when it ends.... :smt017

Same as the printed booklets you can get at your local fishing tackle shop...

Trout regulations are Chapter 3.  Detailed listing start on page 26.

Other species restrictions start on page 16 (the table of contents lists, "Species Regulations.......16").

Some places, trout season starts LAST Saturday of April, not the first...other places have different start times.

You can get an alphabetical listing of waters starting on page 29.  Going somewhere new?  The alphabetical listing can make it easy to find out the regulations for that place.
