I had a 4' speargun shipped to me from indonesia.  It came in 6" diameter pvc pipe with end caps and ample stuffing via ups.  The package looked like hell whenh it got to me but the contents were intact.  If I had to ship a rod I'd go pvc.

I buy my rods via the web and they ship them to me in cardboard tubes via UPS.  They have the fragile sticker and I think something about not using conveyor.    Never had any problems and the tubes didn't have any damage.

PVC tubes + UPS. Ship my stuff all over the country and have yet to have an issue.

Just remember, PVC pipe is far cheaper than the commerically blow molded rod tubes from plano and flambeau. Pad with bubble wrap or wrap in old towels or your fishing clothes.  :smt003

If you're doing this constantly using the same tubing, i'd advise you to figure out a locking device for your tube.

Definitely use PVC.
This is more than likely what your fishing rod will go through.
Some of these packages can be in excess of 70lbs.
Cardboard tube, it's only a matter time time before one gets broken.

Dune,
What do you consider expensive? I just return shipped a plano telescoping tube with 7 rods in it from SC to WA via UPS and it cost me $40.00.... consider that the total on the rods is over $350 and the tube cost me another $65. I kind of consider that a bargain since they insured the whole package for 15.00 of the total cost

No i don't consider myself a wealthy man by any means. Prudent yes, thriftful , that too. But if you take the mindset that it's similar to car insurance, then it makes sense. Also have to consider, how often are you doing this, and how valuable are those sticks?

i sell my old gear when i start seeing some of the new stuff come out.i sold a rod to some guy out in the mid west or something around that area i forgot.the cardboard tube was 7'6" i sold the rod for 60$ and charge 15$ for shipping.since this was my first rod didnt know how expensive it was gonna be.ups charged me 60$ for regular ground so i basically sold the rod for 15$.

Owwch. Sorry i asked... that explains a lot.
I have noticed that the online big box retailers of rods have started pushing their slow boat to china policies for the one piece rods over a certain length. I ordered a 6 ft 6 wireline rod from a shop turns out its one piece... shipping time 4-7 weeks special handling. That hurt.

I travel a lot across the nation. So i prefer 2pc. But even the daiwa jupiter and the browning medallions collapse 12 inches. Stll damn long rods. One of the tricks is just making sure that great11 ft Ande tournament surf rod you are taking along for example breaks down to something under 48 inches. One of the rods i mentioned earlier packed into that plano tune is a 10 ft 8 inch hvy spinner that makes it down to 2 parts just at 65 inches each.  Had i not been sending others along i would have sold this or gifted someone a great 275.00 rod to avoid the costs.
