I use crab rings just to have something to do every 15 minutes.
I also use promar and danielsons to lock in those that want to run  away  with my bait :smt044

But since Rockfish season is still open, wouldn't that give you something else to due?

I mainly crab Doran  and there's nothing there but crabs....except opening day!

I will be soaking 2 danielsons on Sat and Sun. I have 4 people in my group and hope to get at least 12 legals in each pot. I have had 18 legals in one pot before(24hr soak). No matter what, its crab season baby!!!!! Very little can touch crab hot and fresh out of a nice beer & old bay steam bath!

Thanks, I think for the long soak the trap has the rings beat, but for the short soak,  IMHO there is no comparison.  After watching some go pro footage, I would say it would take longer for the crabs to fill up a trap, vs a ring.  Of course I think has factor, as something like a chicken leg, with its inherent high fat content can create a slick over a longer time period aids in a trap's effectiveness.  The flip side is I think an oily bait (one that milks faster) works to ring users advantage ( I like to "lube" my bait before I send it down and after every subsequent pull).  Again this is only my theory.  Rings, may appear less of a challenge than a trap. I know all things being equal, with observations I had with JT fishing last year, were my rings did a great job on the short soak.  He was using traps and for the short soak using the same bait he would end up with less for the same time period.  Now while I was catching more crab, he in the end caught larger crab.

The advantage of a hoop/ring net versa a trap is the number or size of the opening for the crab to enter; and the hoop/ring clearly has a trap beat. But it can also work to its disadvantage by also allowing them to escape; thats why hoops/rings require more frequent checking. Crabs feed for about 12-15 minutes, then move on; if you don't check your ring/hoop frequently enough, you'll just be feeding crabs. Crab Pots/traps, once a legal size enters the trap, DINNER!

After watching several you tube/Go Pro videos of life in the crab trap a crab can and do escape from traps.  Of course we copuld just go Big Jim style and harpoon the buggers with the spear gun of death.  I mean even Neptune fears Big Jim!

... do escape from traps.

Not as easily as they do in a ring/hoop net...
