this previuos weekend both vince and i decided to break-in our new prowler 15's  at half moon bay... we're rookies to the  kayak aspect of the sport, but i feel we learned alot from our trip... we went as far as the levy of the harbor, we didnt want to risk going out to far. but we did get a few bites and i was able to catch and release my first ling from my kayak ( i  had 2that day)...here is the only pic i was able to take...

wow man! that is a beautiful fish!

i can't wait to go rockfishing from HMB harbor once July comes around.

were you folks just padlding around or were you using a fish finder to find different terrain?

i need to learn where the reefs are there. its all new to me and its so much closer than monterey bay.

Not that you were intending to catch a lingcod... but you should be aware that if a DFG warden thinks your targetting an out of season fish you can get a ticket for it.

For example... dragging a jig on the bottom over rocky terrain will probably be interpreted as fishing for rockfish/lingcod and that season doesn't open up herre until July 1st.  However, if you were dragging a halibut rig over sand or using a mooching rig in deep water for salmon and happen to catch and release a lingcod by mistake they wouldn't give you a hard time about it.

yeah, we totally had no idea. we asked a local from the bait shop and he recommended that we tried those lures. he also  mentioned that he went tubing out there, so we assumed that it was alright to fish with what we had. what a typical rookie mistake,we should have went out with some of the anglers from this forum. but to answer your question john, we weren't using any fish finder. just trying using my knowledge of when i used to fish from those rocks...as of this weekend, we're definitely going to try to catch something else...thanks for the insight guys
