I went out alone hooping for rock crabs today over at the Crissy field pier in SF just in from the gate. I was out there for a while trying to get near to my limit of reds and browns. There were not too many groups out there crabbing today but one group showed up and just started pulling up dungies and keeping them. I could tell from a distance they were dungies and that they weren't throwing anything back and when I got close I saw them blatantly tossing under sized dungies in their cooler. Later I asked them how it was going and they said they weren't getting anything. Dungies are out of season and never permitted to be taken out of the bay, it's a hatchery. This was fairly flagrant abuse, so i called cal tip line and made a report, they said they would send a warden over. Kept crabbing for the next two hours and no one showed up to ticket them. I left with a healthy catch of red rock crabs but fairly disappointed in the cal tip line. I didn't think it would be so hard to get someone to show up in the presidio after clearly explaining that someone was poaching undersized, out of season crabs in an off limits area.

You did your part. Good man.

Unfortunately FNG are all stretched thin. Hate seeing folks get away with obvious infractions. Especially crabs and abalone. Two that just piss me off for some reason dunno why.

Yep, you gave it what you should have.

Call again and again if you have too.

Congrats on getting your catch.  I've thought about doing that myself.

Way to go for doing the right thing.  Too bad you didn't see the desired results though.  Good karma!

The only consolation was that right as they showed up the crabbing slowed way down and they were not pulling much to begin with. Also the sea lions were ravaging them and they wasted a ton of time cuz they had to go buy more bait. I didn't feel like telling them it would be wise to quietly as possible slip your trap into the water so as not to alert the lions with the sound of the splash and have them come running. I was by myself and not about to get into the morality of poaching with an overweight 6'4 latino dude, his friend and his obscenely obese girl friend.

Thanks for the support guys, and btw the catch was not too shabby, 25 rock crabs, some were quite large at 6-7 inches across.

Good work for trying. Unfortunately, people pull dungies from the bay all too often.  :smt011

When alone, it's never a good idea to confront someone.
