I'm looking for "clean" hardwoods for a wood burning (cooking) oven.  I am looking for fruit and nut woods as well as oak.  I'm trying to stay away from woods that have higher levels of creosote or oil residues.

I've been checking the free section on CL and have had some luck.  I've also contacted tree service companies, but wanted to see if the members here might have some tips as well.

Thanks,
Nate

A wise endeavor, Friend. I like the idea of getting wood from a tree or landscaping service. It will need to age, of course.

I don't have a limitless supply but I'd happily give you a wine box full of my hardwood kindling.  I'm a cabinet maker and save all scraps for winter heat.   It's an odd mix but it's all kiln dried.  I'm a very small shop so I would try contacting a larger shop as they would generate a ton of scraps.  I know that one of the local shops here in town has a big box outside that they throw hardwood scraps.

Do you have the means of cutting and hauling firewood?  I used to burn for heat and would gather 5 cords every fall using USFS permits.

I live in the foothills around Placerville.  Cal-TRANS trims the oaks along the major state highways and leave the log sized pieces laying on the shoulder.  If you aren't looking for huge quantities, say, just a pick up truck load, take a drive along highway 49 for example and drive slow, looking for wood that's been laying in the grass since last year.  Tell-tale signs are cut limbs that were hanging over the highway and no longer there but a scar on the tree remains.  Slash piles of small limbs piled up is another hint the larger burnable sizes are laying nearby.

Nate, I have some oak wood that's been in my backyard for 10 plus years. I don't use the fireplace anymore. I will be on your side of the Bay today. Let me know if you want it. Have to be in San Mateo in the evening.

Hey Howard,

That'd be great.  I'll PM you.
