Just wanted to thank all the NCKA members for there posts.
It has provided a great arena for learning.
I am going out this morning at Stillwater Cove with my son for our first kayak fishing trip.
We are pretty excited with it being our first time out does anyone have any suggestions?
We are not set up with a fish finder yet

I know I'm late for your go-out but here's some of my thoughts:

1.  Welcome!  Have safe and be fun!

2.  Launch earlier-avoid the wind get as much fishing time in before the wind comes up (and it will)

3.  Work just outside the edge of the kelp beds 1st.  Ling cod territory.  Inside the kelp beds can be very productive aso for a variety of RF and the occasional Cabezone.

Good luck/

Allen

don't sweat the lack of a fishfinder.  I did not use one for the first 2 years I kayak fished.  They are nice, but definitely not required.  My son and I fished many a weekend at Stillwater.  He turned into a spear fisherman but I still manage to get him fishing once in awhile  :smt001

Like Allen said, use the kelp as your guide, and when fishing open water, just bounce your rig along the bottom to "feel" what is down there.  You will snag sometimes but you can usually let some line out and pump the rod a few times to make it come loose.  You can always paddle to the other side of the snag and that works as well.
