Or...

Like thumbing through a Victoria's Secret catalog while your buddies catch a show at the Mitchell Brother's Ofarrell Theatre.

Like going to Alexander's Steakhouse and ordering a salad.

Like booking a wine tasting that consists of visiting E&J Gallo and drinking nothing but Boone's Farm, Night Train Express & Thunderbird.

Your Baja Expedition is one to inspire all of us to get out there and explore more of Baja! What would some of the more important tips in putting together one of these trips? How much did this run you guys? Are there any dangerous places you avoided? Was everyone self sufficient or was the gear list pared down so that you could bring more of everything? If you did it again, what would you do different, the same?

Planning and flexibility.  Research where you want to go and be ready for your plans to change...too much to go into here, but its good to have an idea, but you need to remember the fish may not be there, the weather may suck, or the campground you read about might be gone.

How much did this run you guys?
Phase 1...aka camping was VERY inexpensive.  Gas in Baja was only 2.50, and my sissy Taco gets great mileage, so for the whole trip I only spent $500 on gas...and I split that with Justin.  We ate fish, and bought beer tortillas, limes etc.

Phase 2-aka Rancho Leonero is more, it cost guys around 150 a day double occupancy...but we were sooo ready for it!  It was the perfect decadent way to round out the trip.

Are there any dangerous places you avoided?
TJ and the northern coast...thats why we went in at Tecate.

Was everyone self sufficient or was the gear list pared down so that you could bring more of everything?
We had as little double gear as possible and it still barely fit in the trucks.

If you did it again, what would you do different, the same?
I would skip the Pacific side in the summer.

awwww.....    :smt009

sean,

when you want to branch out and do some more exploring...

morro santo domingo. sand bass, halibut. no surf, well, not much,  :smt005

you should check punta santa rosarito (biggest point of the seven sisters) in the summer. big halibut in shallow. no surf in the summer (well not much for the pacific side)

also, punta abreojos for more reef fishing and the start of the warm water fish again. GNAR surf in the summer and massive afternoon winds. bring a surf board and kite board.

finally punta conejo. I caught a rooster fish from shore, my brother caught sierra, guy next to my brother caught a CHUCKE-size (TM!  :smt003) tuna from shore, plus a snook. it is an oyster fishery. this spot has some mondo surf in the summer. bring your pintail.

one thing to understand is that after san diego to down past san quintin, the water is cold, like morro bay cold. it doesn't warm up until you get pretty far down there.

I posted some tips after my January 2007 road trip to Baja. Not much in the way of fishing info, but you'll probably find some of this to be useful:

J-I hear ya, but for me going to baja isn't about catching a halibut...I can do that here.  Cortez just feels more "baja" to the long traveling norteno.

All the pictures from this trip aren't available and Scwafish doesn't seem to be a member any more.   Anyone have these archived anywhere?  I am trying to inspire a buddy to get a Baja trip together...

Not sure if I'm linking it correctly, but show your friend this video. I always thought it captures the "vibe" of the Baja trip nicely. I wish I was fishing back then.   :smt010
