I lived in San Diego for a little bit, and I used to go to Karl Strauss often and my favorite beer is the Red Trolley Ale.  When we got there, they had ran out, so bottles were our only option.

Awesome trip. Sorry your hotel sucked. IMHO there is only one inexpensive motel is SD I'd recommend. The Dolphin Motel at Fishermen's Landing. On Trip Advisor it's currently #10 of 247 hotels in SD
