Has anyone used or installed a Scotty Anchor lock on their kayak? Was thinking about putting one on my X Factor.
Thanks Level 4

I'd be a little hesitant in mounting this to my kayak.  From what I have seen of them, there is no way to swiftly remove the rope from the unit in the event all hell breaks loose and you need to "cut ties" with your stuck (or otherwise) anchor setup.  I guess you could remove the whole anchor lock and throw overboard with the line/anchor if you attach a float to the end of the rode.  Just my thoughts on this.  I believe a "Figure 9" with a float on the end of the anchor rode would make a much better method (possibly when combined with a Scotty "Trapease".

If you left the anchor rope without a knot, wouldn't it just slip out through the anchor lock in such an emergency?

That is correct.  Your anchor/rope would then be disposable in an emergency.

I do like that Trapease though. I do a lot of crabbing. Do you think it would make for a safe river anchor platform?

Naoaki uses the Scotty anchor setup both on his old Mini-X and his Trident. For the Trident setup I built him an angle bracket that mounts into the factor rudder holes where on the Mini-x, the base of Scotty bracket was mounted directly into the plastic. You can see the Mini-X set up in the picture below. The key is to remove the locking mechanism in the scotty and use a cam cleat next to your seat to lock the rope in. To answer your question they work for anchoring up in the river.

No you have to be able to hold the rope up if you let it drop it will lock. I had one on my F&D and I could reach back and hold the rope up enough to let it slide thru, when I mounted it on my XF I couldn't reach far enough back to release it enough to let the rope slide thru. Some have taken the release off and just used the pulley and put a clam cleat mounted near the seat.  I don't think you have to remove the release you can just flip it over.  For still water it's fine.

Thanks for the info guys. I just bought a Trap-Ease from scotty and will use it with a clamcleat. I fish the Smith and Klamath rivers and crab here in Crescent City, so it can be used for more than one application. If you have any more advise feel free to send it my way.
