Rod: I use an 8'6" Shimano Clarus (CSC-86M-2) Line weight = 8-17 lb / Power = Medium / Action = Fast

Reel: I use a Shimano Calcutta 401 TE loaded with 20# Suffix Braid and about 20 feet (top shot) of 15-17 pound mono.  I'm a big believer of the light stuff

*This is my primary set-up for ocean fishing for over 10 years of kayak fishing. it's caught Halibut, rockfish, salmon, Bay Stripers, sharks and WSB.

Never had issues with this set-up :smt045 I always carry fresh water in my truck and do a quick rinse on the rod and reel as soon I get to shore. Take care of your gear and it will take care of you :smt002

Those Clarus rods are GREAT!  We used them back in Florida for Tarpon (80-100#) on mono, no braid.  Clarus has every bit the quality of the higher priced rods, less the $$$ pricetag.

Ugly stik and I like my Shimano TLD 15.  The lever drag is perfect for kayaks.  60# braid.  This was the reel that Jim Sammons recommended (when he was a Shimano sponsored guy) for use in Mexico.  It can handle big and small alike.  It has a very smooth drag too.

I hit an estate sale (715am) a few months ago and found a TLD 15 on an ugly stick tiger. Talked him down to $60 for both. I love this reel. I've been using old penns for decades, long beach's, del mar's, super mariner. I much prefer a lever drag.

Jigmasters are great for the money but heavy and the clicker is stiff. Wide metal spool is nice.

I use the same rod as Mooch. Works excellent also in the rivers here in Sacramento
My reel is substantially cheaper than his though. Abu Garcia Ambassador 5500.

If you are not a penn guy I swear by my Abu 6500 with braid good for all the species you mentioned and wsb

I have 2 of the 6501 (lefty).
I took them both apart last night and cleaned and regreased everything. Pretty easy reel to service.
