This morning's offerings on ShiptoShore radio included a report of an Orca killing a Sea Lion in Monterey Bay.  It's a cool place to live.  Too bad the rain is coming down in a heavy wash.  We are doing house chores.

When you're salmon fishing, there's never an Orca around when you need them...
Pat, you live in a veritable paradise. I got just a small glimmer of that on Friday when I drove the 2 1/2 miles to Linda Mar beach at 6 AM, parked in a new lot where they have outdoor showers, and dove for a couple of hours before rinsing off me and my gear and proceeding on to work. It just reminded me of Monterey or La Jolla Cove. Summer's here - Life is good...

Another thing - Notice how we villainize sharks and do the opposite to whales. Sharks are bloodthirsty killers, and whales are happy peace-loving creatures - just ask that sea lion...

Y'know.......you may be on to something.  Orcas are smart.  If Sea Lions can learn that party boats mean easy salmon lunches, why can't Orcas be encouraged to target inattentive, nice fat sea lions?

The party boat captains should hire me to do the training.......life would be even better here in paradise.

............getting a permit to take a "few" sea lions to use in the training process would be easy, right?????............ :smt002

We villainize sharks and not Orcas, because Orca's have been good enough to pretty much leave us the heck alone, despite all the crap we've pulled on them.

Sharks, not so much. Just ask Randall Fry and Deb Franzman. Not that I'm calling for death to all sharks, just explaining some of the "why" behind what's considered good and what's condidered bad.

Mabe include a signal in their sonar set-up to mimic a stranded sea lion, or shut off the sonar to help the orca's find the seal.

That seems reasonable, DaveyJ.  At some point they will hopefully figure it out.
