Hey everyone,
Wondering if anyone knows of any lakes around Mt. Lassen NP (staying near Manzanita Lake) that would be good for bringing the family and bait fishing for trout.  I'd like to get my 6-year old daughter into a couple of trout. I know Manzanita has special restrictions and just doesn't seem to fun for a kid (she can't cast yet).  Let me know even if it's within a hour or so.
Thanks,
Joe

Best bet is Hat Creek, right in the campgrounds, about a 5 minute drive.  Another option is Baum Lake (30 minutes), and Lake Britton (about 45 minutes, great crappie fishing).  Battle Creek Reservoir is another option, but about 5 miles in on a dirt road.  Manzanita is a tough one to fish, crystal clear water, heavily fished....if it were me I'd go with Hat Creek.

I agree with Hat Creek which runs from your area of camping towards Berny Falls. The water is ideal for a youngster who doesn't cast, just drop and let the current do the rest. Use the camp grounds that have bridges and easy access. Taught all my Nieces and Nephews to fish there.  They stock fish all along the creek and even the lake your camping at. Frank

+1  But watch for the buzz tails hanging out by the water.

Hat Creek is the obvious close choice. Silver Lake and the lake loop inside Caribou wilderness if you travel a bit east. Farther east Eagle Lake might be worth a visit.  Lake Almanor at Hamilton Branch or Winnebago Point if you go south.

By the way if you are staying in the cabins at Manzanita Lake make sure to find the cabin campground host, Bryan.  He's my cousin and a fellow NCKA'er, finally got his Hobie up there so he should have some good reports for you.
