Area around the bouey outside the harbor produced when I was there Sat (in a pb). I got both my fish (15-20#) on a RSK with a herring at 15 or 16 pulls and a 2lb ball. Another guy on the boat had his two at 25-30 pulls. Last two other fish were on pink lady diver and DR with hootchie.
Once we got our first nice sized fish we re-trolled that area for limits..so once you find em, stick on em!
Best luck & tight lines.

Hey Ed,

Thanks again for the ride up to my rig at goat rock last week.

My tip is get there early. Be out there with a ball of bait under you and ready to drop your line at the stroke of sunrise. With so much food available the bite doesn't seem to be lasting long.

That's great advice from Don - I've seen early hot bites fall off quickly out of Trinidad, Shelter Cove and Eureka this year.

Also be prepared to troll more miles than you thought you'd have to.

Keep a nice presentation - you only have one line out there enticing fish.

Best of luck.   :smt001

When you guys talk about how many pulls, what does that mean? Also will a spinning rod work find when trolling for salmon on a deep six? 15-20 lbs rod is what i have.

Hey Steph,

When salmon fisherpeople let out their line they grab it with their hand in front of the reel and 'pull' it out, counting the pulls, so they know exactly how far out their line is. I think most people consider a pull about a foot long.

A very big spinning reel with a lot of drag will work in a pinch, but it isn't recommended. That jigmaster with the spare spools in the classified section is a great deal and would work nicely.

I watched a boat last saturday catching salmon from an aluminum boat . I was one the jealous people on the jetty . We went out thursday the 5th in a PB about 8th of a mile straight out from the head and caught 3 salmon at 20 pulls with a herring and 40 oz balls.
