Humminbird PiranhaMAX 170 Fishfinder and Dual-Beam Transducer

Hey all,

So I think I picked out the FF I want for my yak that is sub $100 since I'm just starting out. Has anyone used this specific one or know much about it? I had 2 quick questions: What type of battery would I need to run this? Thanks.

I have the P- Max 180 (I think?). It's been working out just fine for me, so far (about a year).

I went to Radio Shack and bought an 8 AA battery holster (8 times 1.5 volts is 12 volts). It has the same connection as a 9 volt battery, so also purchase a 9 volt battery lead. Splice the battery lead to the power cord of your FF and you're good to go for about $10.

I run the 170.  Have had it for about three years.  Basic unit but solid.  For keeping track of depth and general structure finding it works fine.  For finding fish and bait, it is very basic.  I really don't use it for that.  That being said, I can see my downrigger weight and lures when I am dropping vertically.  It is marked as a large fish so another reason why I don't really use it as a "fish" finder.  I run the 8AA battery pack as above and store them in a peanut butter jar (plastic) which fits perfectly into the cup holder right under my ff.  Lasts for a couple of (4-5 hour) days no problem.  Being gray scale it doesn't suck a lot of juice.  For the sub $100 dollar price point it is solid.

I echo everything Steveislost said - it's a solid performer for basic functions in its price range.

I don't mind the weight and my T-11 has a battery bag in the bow, so I just bought a bigger battery thinking I could add accessories or enjoy longer run times if necessary.

I'm getting ready to set up a "double A" box for versatility this week though...

I bought a 170 as a spare, then I noticed the mounting base differs from the other Bird FF's I've used. Would have to drill different holes to mount. If you plan to upgrade in the future, look at the mounts for the FF you would really like to have to see if they match.
