so when i wear my go pro under my hood it leaves enough opening for water to flow though out my temple area and what bothers me is when it gets in my ears , usually i let a little bit of water in there but not at a free flow..any ideas on how to raise my comfort? cotton balls? ear plugs? would that conflict with equalizing? I'm not gonna wear it over my hood because i had a near loss of equipment.

Definitely do not wear ear plugs when diving.
Have you thought about maybe sewing a couple of strips of velcro to the top of the hood and the strap of the GoPro?
That would give you more security wearing it onthe outside.

You can wear the Gopro with the headstrap over the hood and in order to reduce the risk of loosing it here are some things to consider.
1. Adjust your strap to be snug but not too tight or too loose over your hood.
2. Put your mask on with the mask strap over your gopro strap. Dependent on your type of snorkel/snorkel keeper you maybe able to routhe the gopro starp between your mask strap and your snorkel.
3. Use a leash from your gopro to mask or some other anchor point. Here is an o-ring leash that I use when I wear my GoPro over my hood.  The rubber oring goes over my head and sits like a loose collar around my neck. The elastic oring it is easily removable, it can be stretched and pulled off. You can use a thicker rubberband instead of the oring.

The no plugs rule is outdated.  I wear docs proplugs (whenever they aren't lost) made specifically for diving.  They're vented to enable equalizing and keep cold water out.  They help a ton and have never had any issues.

Vented Docs Pro Plus are great Andy, never go with out. Stay away from the JBL, the vent clogged and destroyed my ear. No probs with docs.

Again VENTED and go try them on first.

Also found it helps to move the bulky buckle back behind the ear, away from the opening edge.
