If other Wilderness pro-staffers are as tough as that dude is, then Wilderness has my vote for the "toughest kayak fishing team".  It makes us Hobie, Ocean Kayak, and other kayak team guys look like wussies. :smt005

If I was doing that same demo, I'd be using a chunk of pork butt from the butcher instead of my own flesh.

I'm on the team and you won't see me practice that. He can have all the gory demos to himself.

Be a man and just jam it all the way through!!!!! Cut the barb off then pull it back out. Hurts like hell, but doable. Had a girl do it to me with a 7/0 J hook on a party boat I was deck handing on and made her watch me pull it out. I bled like heck, but the pain wasn't too bad.  Atleast it was a big hook and I did it quickly. It went through the fleshy part of my palm between the thumb and finger. I just stuck it out the otherside, cut the hook and pulled it out. I was okay; she almost passed out.  :smt003

I agree with Splashdown.   The technique I've learned is to push the hook all the way through to expose the barb and then snip it with wire cutters (or a good set of fishing pliers) and then pull the hook back out.  I did it once and it works.  Heck... now that I think of it,  I should have video'd it and posted it here, but that was the last thing on my mind at the time :smt003

I was fishing Lake San Cristobal, Lake City Co last summer when I hook a trout on a split rapalla.  I picked the trout up by lifting the rapalla. (dumb)  Anyway, like most trout it started wiggling  and the front barb stuck in my right index finger.  I saw that the barb was still out, but the trout keeping wiggling and the hook went deeper and buried the barb.  I ended up cutting the treble off and left only part of the shaft and hook in my finger.
I found it difficult to reel  with a split rapalla dangling off my finger.  The fish were still biting
and I still had some daylight left.  I tried to pull the hook out using splashdown's method but it was too painful.  My buddy told me that there was a PA at the local clinic that had a
reputation of getting hooks out.   She made a special trip to the clinic, along with an assistant.  When she explained that she was going to pull the hook out with a string, I had to do a breathalyzer test to make sure she was sober.  Well, it took her two yanks, but it was painless.  I am a believer of this method now.  But I would still never put a treble hook in my body just to prove a point.

Wow, I watch his show all the time and now have total respect. That's crazy. Will have to give it a try. I usually drive the point all the way through and cut off the barb.

I was at ER for one of my martial art stunts that didnt go very well and an ER doc took a hook out of a kids arm like that. He tied a piece of surgical thread to the eye and around the shank and pulled down and out at the same time. Just as Chad showed. The kid was bawling his head off and the hook popped out and the kid just went silent.
