The National Gaurd is sending me to a technical school in August for two months.  I may get weekends off or some weekends off, as such I am looking for the NCKA of the east coast area.  I will be at Fort Lee, Virginia, which is next to Petersbur, VA.  Any info is greatly appreciated.  Who knows I may try some bass fishing or ????

Spent my last 6 months at Fort Lee after returning from Vietnam. Hated that place, and they hated Vietnam veterans.  :smt005 At least it was close to Washington, DC. Here is a link that might present some possibilities.  http://www.kayakonline.com/virginia.html

Wow hard to imagine some place in the south that hates the military.,  but it was the 60's a different time and place.  I hope it isn't that bad now.  They have done a ton of renovation out there.  Place is all new from what I understand.

The James River has lots of big blue cats. I think it has good smallmouth fishing in the more upper reaches.

Head down to Tidewater /Norfolk/Virginia Beach/.  Rent a room in one of the Virginia Beach resort hotels. Take a charter boat and fish the CBBT (Ches. Bay Bridge Tunnel) pilings for flounder, striped bass, sea trout, bluefish, puppy drum (channel bass), spot, croaker and tautog. Take a charter boat out of Rudee Inlet for ocean/wreck fishing. You can kayak and fish the Dismal Swamp or Back Bay for large bass/crappie. Drive to the Outer Banks of North Carolina for world class surf/pier/offshore fishing.

Definitely get a fishing license while you are there because Virginia has some great fishing. Find somebody with a car-get off post and go!

There's some big east coast kayak forums out there (Stripers etc.)

Kevin, I meant that the military officers at Fort Lee were not keen on Vietnam vets. After a year or two in a jungle environment, spit shining boots, starch creasing your pants, or polishing brass belt buckles just was not at the top of the bucket list for vets. Some were threatened with being shipped to Germany for the last 6 months of duty. In the end, I got discharged 6 months early.  :smt005

Hojo, with two conflicts winding down, I am seeing the same thing.  More emphasis on chicken shit, new PT test, paper work, and get rid of that combat stuff because we are going back to what didn't work in the first place.
