Back in my earlier ab diving / spearfishin days  ( 1980's ) we would put ab guts in a mesh bag and attach to our float tube anchors . This attracted cabezon by the handfull , was or is that legal ? Always did everything by the book or so I thought , recently  got to wondering about this !

Thanks , Dan

Definitely legal.

Some argue that you could potentially run into trouble on the North Coast (with abs out the shell in possession), but I highly doubt it. I've never heard one instance of a citation for it, and I know of a number of wardens that are cool with it.

Makes an excellent bait for h&l fishing, too. Attractive to cabs and stays on the hook very well.

The first I heard of this was two weeks ago at Albion. A salty gentleman who was camping next to me told me that it was a very effective way to attract fish. I saved some ab guts and intend to try it next time I'm out.

if you are ab diving simply put your abs that you pulled to tag and keep them in a mesh bag. drop the mesh bag down under your float connected to a float line onto the rocks below and watch the cabs come in to chew on the bag.

as they start accumulating take your pick, they wont even know what hits them :)
