So I'm at Sports Authority I saw this castable crab trap, looks like a sandwich with a spike in the middle to put your bait on.  anyone ever try these?  i can see that it would be real easy for a furbag to steal squid right off that spike...

They call them Crabhawks. They are great if you use them like rings. You have to check them often.

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

Not legal in Ca.  http://californiaoutdoors.wordpress.com/2012/03/22/crab-hawk-traps-2/

Oops!

I didn't even look at the regs for what is legal for crabbing.  Good thing I wasn't checked.

Being required to have escape rings on an open trap is silly.  What purpose would they provide?
The trap isn't much of a trap, but more of a snare.  All you need is one leg to get caught in the net when pulling it back up.

As far as weight, I zip tied one 6oz duck decoy weight to each one. Makes them drop quicker, and hold closed better when retrieving.
