I'll be back at it on Friday. Launching out of McAvoy's at 0600. The tide is decent and the wind will be at 12mph. Not a good day to go if your new to yak fishing.  The wind makes it choppy, the current is strong and will be going opposite the wind. Its not the most tranquil setting, but that's the norm for the area, any takers?

I was there at 0615, got 1/2lb of Grass Shrimp and headed out.  Fished the last of the incoming for nothing, then the tide turned and the little 14" stripers started biting.  Which would be cool if I was using a bass rod, but 14" stripers suck on heavy rods with 6oz weights.  They steal precious Grass Shrimp.  Anyhow, at about 9:45 I got the Sturgeon Tap-Tap.  I grab my rod, get another Tap, and set the hook.  I've got something of decent size on the other end.  I know it was a decent size because it took some line, and I've got my reels set pretty tight because I'm using medium-heavy Ugly Stik Tiger rods.  The fish peels a little bit of line, fights a little bit, then comes off.  I drop an F Bomb, reel in, re-bait and cast out.  I then proceeded to have the Bait stealing baby stripers eat the rest of my shrimp.  So now I'm back home wondering what that was on the other end of my line.  Keeper Sturgeon?  Giant Striper?  Dammit!!!  Next time, I think I'll reset the hook after a few seconds.  And buy a pound of shrimp or at least 3/4lb.  Its all good though, I'll be back at it next week!

Good luck to all,

Jeff

Same spot??

Good to hear that you at least got a little rush out of the day,

I'm never sure how much bait to get if there aren't any stripers around you don't need much, on the other hand....... sometimes I buy 1 bullhead so if I run out of shrimp I can pretend to fish with it,

Same area Dale.  Baitshop lady said the Sturgeon action has really picked up this last week in the Port Costa-Pittsburg-Antioch area.  I'll be back at it next week, weather permitting of course.  Things are heating up!

I hear ya, I'm super thankful I caught that oversize, I dont know if I'll ever catch another fish that size!  It really was a rare thing, and a huge accomplishment for me as a kayak fisherman.  But now I want some for the table!  If I can fill a tag this year I'll be stoked, I'll keep at it until it happens!
