So I went to West Marine on Tuesday to check out a few items that are on the top of my list. A VHF hand held, compass and bilge pump.

They had about 10 different hand helds on display and I wanted to know if anyone could share their personal opinion pro or con to the following radios:

ICOM M24

ICOM M72

Standard Horizon HX-851

And yes I did do a search on VHF and it did come up with a lot of information and reviews. Some old and some new I just wanted to see if anyone either used these particular models or if there was some fancy new one out on the market that is getting rave reviews.

As always thanks for reading my post.

i pick the one that is reallywaterproof, has a clip mount(attaches to PFD) and get the 1 or 2yr warranty on it for sure.
Be safe.

That is code for standard horizon. You couldnt pay me enough to trust my ass to icom waterproofing. Seen LOTS of these fail quickly.
Honestly I would go for the cheapest SH, I believe its the 280s. Reason being not for the price, but it is the smallest, thinnest lightest most robust out there. Those are the most important factors in a yak vhf because it MUST be attached to your pfd AT ALL TIMES. Bulkier units are a pain to lug all day and seriously get in the way during self rescue. Floating models are bulky. Bells and whistles/gps = battery hogs.
I think that SH 8 series you mentioned is pretty compact.

I had the west marine brand 150 which was amazing loved it but there was some stickyness with the dials probably from when I dumped it in bay mud so i brought it back and they gave me a new VHF! They discontinued the 150 so they gave me the 155 which i love even more! Its lighter and I believe it floats so cant go wrong with that.

I have a SH 280 and I am very happy with it.  It does the job,  I keep a lanyard on it to my PFD so if it does fall I can get back.

One thing to remember, West Marine generally prices on the higher side but they price match with online competitors.  Bring in a print out of the product and save some dough.

Had a S H for about 8 years now, it still works great.
That extended warranty W.Marine sells is a pretty good deal. Check it out.

Recently (1-2months) just bought the icom ic-m34.  Tested it out 3-4 times while fully charged and worked for the whole day. Also have an ole west marine one and used that one while capsized.  Work perfectly.  Called the coast guards very well.  Bet the model is discontinued any way.

Antonio, I have the Icom IC-M88. At Bean Hollow it hit the antenna with no problems at about 1 mi. out while drenched in the water. Switched and called in a Hilo  that was barely visible  on the horizon. They don't call me Frankswimming for nothing. :)
