ok, heres the pic, you can see where it melted at one point, but don't know when it happened.

theres not actually a metal ring, but there fitting that each positive lead fits into, that all mounts up on the post, not sure theres room for an additional ring, as the screw that goes into the battery was just long enough to mount all this crap on.

You can also see where the wire, off that red lead is frayed...

Other then a dead battery, what other signs may indicate a bad alternator?

Go to Chevy... get the new cables. Why mess around? It is obviously the, or part of the problem. Those cut and repair ends fail and melt a lot. Spend the $$$ go to Chevy...  :smt006
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Ok, so does that look like a past DIY repair job?

Are they pretty basic to install?

Pain in the butt :smt044 but not beyond basic skills :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 Good weekend job... takes about 30 min for me to do at the shop. 1hr or so at home. Caution can cause serious bouts of turrets syndrome at times. Keep the kids inside and TV/Stereo up loud :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

Another unrelated tip. The fatal flaw on the Subaru boxer engine (97 to 00) is the head gasket. More of these engines die because of this flaw than anything else.
If you have any of the following symptoms get the car to a good  Subaru mechanic immediately:
Using coolant/ steam from exaust.
Sudden overheating.
Vasaline type deposit in the coolant overflow res/ oil sheen observed on the surface of the coolant at the radiator cap.
Any OBD2 codes relating to temp sensors/logic.

Just something tup keep an eye on. This is that engines achillies heel. Id say half of the cheap 97to00 subies on CL have blown head gaskets.
